Hi, my name is Lisa Marcoe, and I am the founder and owner of Marcoe Music. My personal motto is that I am passionate about teaching, and I create a great love for music in my students too!
I am a composer, performer and a music teacher. I have extensive experience in music lessons for piano, guitar, violin and most band instruments as well. I have a master’s Degree in Music and a bachelor’s Degree in Music Education.
I founded Marcoe Music because I saw the need for students to have a private teacher that helped them enjoy the process of learning. I also saw the need for students to find their passion for music. There are many music teachers out there, but many students lose interest or get burned out. It is not enough to teach students to read music or master a classical piece. Students need to have a chance to discover their talent. The lesson should be a time of discovering and creating, discovering all the different aspects of music through other people’s compositions and creating their own.
Testimonial from Mrs. C: “My son wanted to play percussion in the wind ensemble and with Ms. Marcoe’s help, he made it and they are now performing in New York”.
I believe in total immersion of music. What does that mean? My lessons include classical study, music theory, composition, playing by ear and exploring all the various styles of music. Studying the masters such as Bach and Beethoven has been proven to enhance intelligence. Music theory is the knowledge of scales, intervals, chord progressions and so much more. With composition, students will be able to write their own music. Learning to play by ear, my students can bring in a song they want to play, and I will teach them how to find the melody on the keys and feel the rhythmic pattern. By exploring other styles, students are able to enhance their taste in music. I individualize each student’s lesson to fit their particular learning abilities, and I teach all levels from beginning to advanced. I give a lot of positive constructive feedback during the lesson, and we have a good time while they are learning.
Learning to play an instrument should be fun as well as disciplined. I have a high success rate of students mastering their instrument because I understand the importance of making the music lessons fun and finding excellent music to practice. It is similar to finding a good book to improve reading; every person likes something different. If students play songs they enjoy, they are more likely to practice and learn theory while doing it. When students practice, they improve. I expect my students to practice at least 30 minutes 5 days a week.
My students also enjoy participating in a yearly recital to show off their difficult pieces they have mastered such as “Maple Leaf Rag” or “Moonlight Sonata.” Many students perform two instruments and some perform their own song they have composed. All their friends and family are invited to celebrate the students hard work and talent. Recitals give the students a goal that helps them focus on practice. The recital becomes a family event that makes the child the center of attention for the day. We celebrate the event with food and with the other families, which creates a community as well. The students get to know the other students, and most have stayed in lessons for years so the students grow up together. The recital gives the student an opportunity to perform in front of others which develops confidence. The recital is a great way to inspire students to master their instrument.
"Ms. Marcoe has made such a difference in my sons music education, he has even decided to pursue music in College." Mr. S
This is a family business taught in my home for over 10 years. I raised my children in Walnut, and they were also a part of the band and choir programs at WVUSD. I know the demands of a great education and the importance of mastering an instrument too. I know that your child may have many activities, and that is why I believe in being flexible in my scheduling. With advance notice, I can reschedule easily and also set up extra time when the student needs help to prepare for a school performance.
Music has made such a difference in my students’ lives, many of whom I have taught from elementary to high school. I have seen them get into the wind ensemble, rejoiced with them when they made it to first chair and even seen some of them go on to pursue music in college. Many students take two instruments, piano and an instrument to play in band or orchestra. I continue to get positive feedback from my students’ parents, and this is one of the reasons I love having my own business.
What makes me different than other teachers is that I care about their success! You get so much more for your money than the run-of-the-mill music tutor. I make music fun and at the same time prepare the student for whatever type of future they want in music. Whether it’s for a college scholarship, future career in music, or to just add a skill that makes life more delightful, I hope to be a part of your Music Education because Marcoe Music Makes Musicians!
